Radiolab sheds light on Tetrachromats; super seers of Color

/ Comments (2)

This is by far the most interesting thing on the web right now: Radiolab (WNYC, via NPR) has looked into Colors, how people see colors, where manmade colors come from and what animals see the widest spectrum (the Mantis Shrimp, believe it or not).

The show is filled with intrigue, wit, humor and mystery. It's absolutely incredible.

Hi:
I love the Radiolab in general and tetrochromats in particular. It is fascinating to know about who sees how many different parts of the electromagnetic spectrum.

I was equally intrigued by the color development in humans and your research seemed to refer to ancient texts (religious ones of our world) to support the development of color. The scientists of the show mention that even the ancient Vedic texts barely mention the color blue. I was intrigued by this and so looked up and realized that the program also seems to have referred to the 'American Journal of Philology-Vol 4, No2, 1883 article of Edward Hopkins. But, the author Hopkins arrives at a very different conclusion than yours. Their summary on page 191 says clearly that the purpose of the Rig Veda was different and hence absence of color is no proof to non development of color sense of humans.
I also sent queries to our Vedanta teachers in Arsha Vidya gurukulam in Saylorsburg, PA and they gave me references to Yajur Veda hymns wherein the color blue (nila) is mentioned- The references are in a) Taittiriya Aranyaka, 1-7.
b) Taittiriya Brahmana, 2-4-4.
I thought I'll share the information with you.
Again, I love all of your shows and I listen to them whenever I can.
Thanks for a great program.

Hi, I'm hearing the tetrachromat show as I write this.
I suspect I am one of your tetrachromats.
I am an artist and massage therapist. Massage therapy is a vehicle for what I have to say is my method of "intuitive healing". I can see the colors of discomfort and ease in the body.
When I was a child I would identify people by the color or colors they seemed to be to me. I would say to other friends, ' you know the girl who is spring green or that lady with the violet or mulberry around her'. Nobody ever saw these colors of course! I spent a lot of my young life not talking about this or thinking I was crazy once I discovered that other people didn't see actual colors the way that I experienced them or that others didn't "see" colors in other people.
I had this sense of people before I had words.
I've also been able to paint very subtle differences in yellows, blues, violets, reds that it seems only some of my artist friends are sensitive to.
There are of course the ideas of aura and electromagnetic frequency that that the body emits.
Perhaps tetrachromats are also more sensitive or more genetically inclined to "see" frequency since colors are all bands of frequency and vibration?
I know that I can see shades of violet in a rainbow that my friends can't seem to see and perhaps many others can too.
Thanks for the show, love it as always, I'm a big fan.
